Il Divo was formed by pop guru Simon Cowell, reportedly after listening to Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman perform a duet of Con Te Partiro. He envisioned a group of multi-ethnic crooners that looked like models, and Il Divo was born. Their self-titled debut album was a huge success on every continent, finding particular favor in the United Kingdom and the United States.

There are several common misspellings of Il Divo, including Ill Divo, Il Devo, Ill Devo, El Divo, El Devo, Ell Divo and Ell Devo. The band's real name, however, means "divine male performer."
